Select Today to open the current date in Day view.
If you want a broader summary of important and upcoming items, use Overview. Overview includes today's calendar items, important or urgent items coming up, birthdays in the next week, and your unresolved missed/overdue task backlog. One-off overdue tasks stay there until you resolve them; repeating task series show their latest missed occurrence. Today can still show resolved entries for context, but Done and Skipped are labelled accurately. Important next only shows actionable important/urgent occurrences, so Done and Skipped work is left out.
