Spanish Slang For Girl (15 Examples!)

Spanish is spoken in some 28 different countries around the world, and so it’s hardly surprising that there tends to be quite a range of different slang terms for just about any common words.

This is just as true of “girl” as it is of any other word, so today we’re going to look at a wide selection of some Spanish slang terms for girl from around the world.

Let’s get started!

Mami

Starting off with one of the simplest and most universal slang terms for girl in Spanish, first we have “mami”.

This one is used mostly in Central America, primarily in Mexico but also in places such as Costa Rica, Colombia and also in Puerto Rico.

Like the way “mommy” is sometimes used in English, this in Spanish is a reference to the word “mother”, and usually means an attractive girl.

Lola

This next one is primarily used in Chile, where it describes a teenage girl.

It doesn’t have to mean anything in particular about the person other than that they are a girl.

You may hear it from time to time in other countries, but it is primarily Chilean.

Piba

Next we have “piba”, a term used right across the Spanish speaking world–you’ll certainly hear it in Spain, but you are also quite likely to hear it used in Argentina, Bolivia and Uruguay.

It is usually a term for an adult woman in particular, and often used to suggest they are attractive, though not always.

Morra

“Morra” is another slang term you’ll commonly hear for girl in Spanish, though it’s mostly restricted to northern Mexico.

Again, it doesn’t necessarily have any specific connotations beyond the broad meaning of woman or girl.

Tía

Though the literal meaning of the word “tía” is “aunt,” in Spain the term is often used simply to refer to any woman or girl.

This is less common outside of Spain and you may be met with confusion since the literal meaning, as I said, is just aunt.

Jeva

This one doesn’t belong to any particular country–you’ll hear “jeva” used just about anywhere in the Spanish speaking world.

It specifically refers to an attractive woman or girl, and this one can often be taken as an offensive term–so, again, be really careful with this one!

Pava

A “peva” is a term used to describe usually a young or adolescent girl, and you’ll mostly hear this one in Venezuela.

However, it is also commonly used in the Dominican Republic and to some extent Paraguay.

Pendeja

This is one that is pretty unambiguously insulting, so be sure to avoid using it unless you want to face the consequences!

“Pendeja” is a common insulting slang term in the Andes region, though it does also carry much the same connotation anywhere it’s used.

Mija

There are a few ways you can construct this one, with varying connotations.

It is commonly used in Chile and for the most part if you just use “mija” by itself then this is a term of endearment, however “mijita rica” is a lot more suggestive–so again, be careful of what you say!

Mina

This one is definitely pretty clear in its sense as meaning a very attractive girl.

It is mostly used in South America, particularly in Argentina, Chile and Paraguay.

Use this one to try and woo the ladies!

Chava

This one is one of the most common and widely used slang terms for girl in the Spanish speaking world.

It’s most common in Central America, in places such as Mexico, Honduras and Nicaragua, although you’ll also hear it in South America, in places like Bolivia, for instance.

Chama

“Chama” can be a term used for girls in general, though usually it has a more specific meaning: girlfriend.

If you hear it used in Venezuela and Nicaragua, then this is the most likely meaning.

Elsewhere, it may just mean girl, though this is much less common.

Chamaca

A variation of “chama” which you’ll often hear in other parts of the Spanish speaking world is “chamaca”.

This one is popular in Mexico, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and Peru, as well as a few other countries in Latin America.

Again, it usually means girlfriend though it can just mean girl.

Changa

This one is specific to Bolivia, and is how Bolivians refer to adolescent girls.

It’s a simple, unadorned term that doesn’t necessarily can any negative or positive connotations–it just means a girl!

Cabra

There is something of a tradition in the Spanish speaking world of using words for animals as slang terms for girls.

Naturally, we have a similar thing in English where we will use terms for animals usually as insults for both men and women.

One example of this that you’ll hear used in Costa Rica and Chile in particular is “cabra”, meaning “goat”.

Naturally, it’s not really very nice to be called a goat, and this tends to be an insult for someone you think is ugly–so you definitely want to be careful with this one!

While you certainly want to be careful with how you use some of these, clearly there are many different ways you can refer to a girl in Spanish.

From the most simple and endearing terms to the more potentially insulting and dangerous, there are dozens of ways to refer to girls from across the Spanish speaking world–though they aren’t all used everywhere, remember!
