“Boa” when used in rap is generally a slang form of “boy”. This is used in many contexts, often as an exclamation or something you might call a friend. This slang term is fairly limited geographically and not the most commonly heard term. The term can have other meanings as an abbreviation, such as “beat off artist”.
This is a somewhat elusive slang term as there is not a great deal of information out there on its usage.
This is often the way with obscure and highly geographically specific slang, but nonetheless, we can say for certain that this is what it means to some people.
Equally, it can have other meanings.
Let’s find out more.
What does boa stand for in rap?
The most likely meaning of the term “boa” in rap is as a slang form of “boy”.
This tends to be fairly limited in terms of where it is used, most commonly being used in Kansas and surrounding areas.
It’s sometimes said to be an “urbanized” form of “boy”, but this is a term with needless baggage which doesn’t really help us understand the term any better.
For the most part, it’s perhaps most helpful simply to understand the word in terms of pronunciation.
I’ll go into this more later, but if someone addresses you as “boa”, then they are probably saying “boy”.
However, something else that’s important to keep in mind is that it’s not meant in a condescending or derogatory way.
Depending on the context, the word “boy” can certainly carry such connotations.
Generally, though, “boa” isn’t even necessarily used as a form of address.
It’s more often a kind of exclamation, as the word “boy” is also used by some parts of the United States.
“Boa, I can’t take this anymore!” for example.
It’s not addressing anyone in particular—it’s just an expression of intense emotion, whether good or bad.
That said, many will still use the term as a way to address you.
Particularly among African Americans in Kansas, the term is more or less a stand in for the word boy and may well be the way someone addresses you.
“How are you doing, boa?” for example.
It’s not meant to be condescending and could be addressed either to an adult or a young person.
In other cases, the term can have other meanings which we’ll look at later.
As you’ll see, though, it should be fairly clear from context which of these meanings the person is employing.
Where does boa come from in rap?
It’s very hard to say when precisely this term started being used.
As mentioned, it is most commonly used in and around Kansas by the black community there.
This tends to be where you’re most likely to hear the term.
However, it’s largely just a question of accent.
Black communities in Kansas, to a large extent though not universally, simply pronounce the word “boy” as “boa”.
This has come to be used by local rappers and rappers from further afield in rap songs and lyrics.
But then, further than that, there’s a specific sense of the word which is particular to certain communities.
Interestingly, “boy” for a long time was and perhaps still is a racist term used by white people to condescend to black people of any age.
To black communities, though, “boa” has become a form of address, almost a term of endearment, stripped of all the baggage the other meanings of the word might have carried.
Language is all about context, and in this context, the word “boa” is much more than just a stand in for “boy”—it’s a specific, regional, dialectal form of address and exclamation.
What does boa mean in Florida?
As we’ve discussed, “boa” is most commonly associated with Kansas slang.
This is where you’re most likely to hear the term, but at the same time you’re pretty likely to hear it in other places too—such as Florida.
In Florida, the word generally has the same meaning of “boy”.
The sense may differ slightly, given that it can be a very idiomatic phrase.
This means any two individuals might use it in a very different way.
Generally, though, it does have the sense of “boy” in one way or another when it used in Florida rap as well as anywhere else.
What else does boa mean?
Boa can certainly have some other meanings, though they are not very commonly used in rap.
It has several standard abbreviated meanings, such as “based on availability” or “Bank of America”—though these are obviously very context specific!
Not many rappers discuss lodging or the Bank of America that often.
One other slang meaning it is often said to have within the rap community is of “beat off artist”.
This would mean someone who masturbates excessively, so it would simply be used as an insult.
It can be playful and not literal in its sense, but this is what the words are supposed to mean.
So, if you’re certain the person you’re talking to isn’t for some reason talking about the Bank of America, then “boy” is probably your best bet for what they mean by this word.
Many who use it won’t even really register it as slang. It’s more simply the way they pronounce the word “boy”.
In some contexts it may have a different slang meaning such as “beat off artist”, but this is hardly the most common slang in the world. It most likely means “boy”.
