Canadian Slang For Hot Girl (Helpful Content)

Canadians have a few different slang terms for hot girl, depending on where you are in the country. They’re most likely to just be called a hottie or a beauty. You might also hear Canadians call hot girls stunners, “tens” or just cuties.

There are a few options, then, in Canadian slang.

A lot of them are shared more broadly with the English speaking world, but have taken on their own Canadian character.

Today, we’re going to look at some of these slang terms in more detail, find out where they came from and how they are used.

Let’s get started.

Canadian Slang For Hot Girl

What do Canadians call hot girls?

Canadian slang has a variety of options for anyone who wants to refer to a hot girl.

It’s hard to say which are the most common, as different terms will be used in different areas and by different generations.

That said, some of the bedrock slang terms are certainly very recognizable.

One of the most common slang terms for a hot girl in Canada is just “hottie”.

This is a catch-all, and can be used playfully to compliment your friend, or, if you’re feeling brave, could be the start of a good pick up line!

Mostly, though, this is a slang term which is used to describe someone among friends, from afar.

“Look at her, what a hottie!” for instance.

“Beauty” is another common one that you might hear used to refer to a hot girl, but this one can have other meanings, so it’s worth being careful.

“Beauty” is just a general slang term used in Canada to mean something is very good.

However, it’s also a good way to refer to a hot girl. “She looks a beauty tonight,” for example.

There are a couple of other slang terms which are a bit more recent and up-to-date.

The first is “stunners”, which is also used in many other English speaking countries.

Interestingly, though, it’s not all that common in the U.S. “Did you see that stunner over there?” for example.

Finally, Canadians have more recently taking to referring to the hottest of the hot girls as “tens”.

Despite its gaining popularity, I’d again be very careful with this one—for reasons I’ll explain, many may not really take this one as a compliment.

Of course, most other slang terms used elsewhere in English do apply and will be understood in Canada. “Cuties”, for example, or “babe” are both commonly used in Canada to refer to a hot girl.

Let’s find out how these terms got into Canada, then.

Why do Canadians say hottie?

The word hottie’s story starts quite recently, around the beginning of the 20th Century.

It’s alternately spelled hottie or hotty. In the 20th Century, the term “hotshot” came to mean an important person.

This term had a variety of meanings over the years, including someone with an itchy trigger finger.

By the 1930s, though, it had come to mean just a very important person, a hotshot.

This was a broad North American term, used in both Canada and the United States. By the 1950s, the term hottie was fully established in Canadian slang as referring to a hot girl.

It could, more rarely, be used to describe an attractive man, too.

In any case, it gained massive popularity particularly towards the end of the 20th Century, and is still probably the most common slang term for hot girl used today.

Why do Canadians say stunner?

Next, we have stunner, which is another of the most common ways to say hot girl in Canadian slang.

It’s used throughout the country, by the young and the old, to refer to a hot girl.

This one is a lot more exclusive, and less likely to be used about a man.

A stunner is typically a hot girl.

This is another very old slang term, older even than hottie.

While we can’t say for certain how old, we first have it attested in writing in 1848, more broadly meaning someone who astounds or amazes.

It quickly caught on in Canada and came to mean a hyperbolically attractive woman, someone who would “stun” you with their appearance.

By the end of the 19th Century, it was well established as Canadian slang term, and used throughout the country where it is still used today.

Why do Canadians say a “ten”?

Finally, we have the term “a ten”. This is a more mysterious one in terms of its origin, though we can naturally say for sure what the meaning was and is.

This is by no means exclusive to Canada, but it has become very popular in Canada.

To call someone a ten is to say that they are essentially as attractive as a person can get.

On a scale of one to ten in terms of attractiveness, they are a ten.

Again, I would be very cautious referring to someone in this way directly to them.

Some might consider it offensive.

But among friend groups, saying “she’s a ten” is a perfect and simple way to say that someone is very attractive.

You’ve always got to be a bit cautious when trying to tell someone they are hot.

While the terms we’ve looked at here certainly are Canadian slang for a hot girl, it’s still not great advice to go around referring to people using these words.

They’re only really advisable if you’re already very familiar with the person!
