What Does TTM Mean In Texting? (Explained!)

TTM typically means “talk to me” in texting. This is often used when you are desperate to hear from someone about something in particular. It can also be used if you are just bored and want to have a conversation. It can have a handful of other, far less common, meanings.

If someone says TTM to you, then, they want something out of you.

It might just be a simple conversation, or they might be looking to get a particular piece of gossip or information out of you.

Let’s find out more.

What Does TTM Mean In Texting?

What does TTM stand for in texting?

TTM usually stands for “talk to me” in texting.

It can have a variety of different applications, but in one way or another, someone is asking you to speak to them.

The simplest, perhaps, is just someone saying this because they are bored and want someone to talk to.

They just want to have a conversation with you, about anything.

“What are you up to? I’m bored, TTM!” for example.

It’s just a conversation starter!

On other hand, it might be that there is a specific thing you want the person to tell you, such as a piece of gossip.

“I know you overheard them talking. What did they say? TTM!” for example.

It’s a plea to get the other person to talk, to tell what they know.

This one may not be as common, but it’s still definitely widely used.

On the other hand, it might be used in times of uncertainty in a relationship or friendship.

One person might be cutting the other out, and they don’t know why.

Thus, they might use TTM to try and bridge the gap. “We never hang out anymore. You won’t tell me why. Please TTM,” for example.

It’s an emotive appeal to someone’s better side, to try and get them to open up when they’ve been feeling like they don’t want to.

So, there’s a variety of ways that people might use this term.

Mostly, it’s just going to be casual and there’s nothing serious involved.

But of course, only the two people involved in the conversation can be sure of that, so it’s very hard to give an absolute way of understanding this.

Where does this come from, then?

Where does TTM come from in texting?

We aren’t sure where or when exactly this phrase entered texting slang.

However, we can make a reasonably good guess that it was quite an early addition to the slang.

We can see it in use from the early 2000s, so it was likely established sometime in the late 1990s.

At that time, mobile phones were not as efficient as they are today.

Everything had to be typed out tediously on an alphanumeric keyboard.

This took a long time, compared to texting today.

So, anywhere and everyone they could find them, people were looking for ways to shorten things down.

Thus we got “lol” and every other text abbreviation including TTM.

It originally meant just “talk to me”, though it has taken on one or two other meanings since then.

So, how do you respond if someone says this to you?

How do you respond to TTM?

This can, in the right circumstance, be a rather delicate thing to respond to.

It might be meant quite seriously—the other person might be telling you they feel sincerely shut out, and that you aren’t talking to them, to the detriment of your relationship.

Thus, before you respond, try and be sure of how they are feeling, really.

On the other hand, though, it might just be entirely casual, as I said.

It might simply be someone asking you to talk to them because they’re bored. In that case, you can say whatever you like!

They’ve asked to talk, so tell them what’s been interesting you lately.

What about social media?

What does TTM mean on social media?

TTM generally means talk to me on social media as well.

Although it could have a broader sense on this platform.

It could be an invitation to a large following to talk about a particular topic.

“I need to learn about Ancient Rome for something I’m making. Experts, TTM!” for example.

You’re looking for help with something.

It can mean other things.

Sometimes it can stand for “to the moon”, which is a niche phrase used in certain financial subcultures, particularly on Twitter.

What else does TTM mean?

TTM does have some meanings which predate even the internet.

Perhaps the most common of these is “to the max”.

This just means that someone is saying they are doing something to the most extreme degree they can, going all out.

“Taking my gym experience TTM today!” for example.

It might also mean “to the moderator”, something you might say in forums or something similar to address the moderators of that forum.

Clearly, though, these other meanings are going to be a lot less common in one-to-one texting than “talk to me” is.

In most cases, then, TTM is going to mean “talk to me”.

This is by far its most common meaning.

That said, you should be familiar with the other potential meanings just in case.

In terms of what you can say and how to respond to this, it just depends on the situation.

Try and decide how seriously you need to take what’s being said and go from there!
