What Does ATP Mean In Texting? (Explained!)

ATP can mean a couple of things, but most commonly in texting it stands for “answer the phone”. It’s used to indicate that the conversation should be done over the phone rather than via text, usually because it would take too long. It can also mean “at this point”.

ATP has several meanings, then, but certainly the oldest and more common is “answer the phone.”

This was its original meaning at a time when texting on a phone was a more tedious process, without the aid of a QWERTY keyboard.

But it has been revived for a different reason today.

Let’s find out more.

What Does ATP Mean In Texting?

What does ATP stand for in texting?

Most commonly, ATP stands for “Answer The Phone” in texting.

The idea being that you’ve been texting someone about something but you’ve realized that it’s too complicated to explain via text and you’d rather talk on the phone.

“I can’t be bothered explaining here. ATP,” for instance.

It could also be a way to open a conversation, a kind of pre-warning that you are about to call someone.

“I need to talk to you. ATP,” for instance.

Of course, it could also be a bit more confrontational—it could be something you say to someone when they are not answering the phone.

“Where are you? ATP!” for example.

This is by far the most common meaning and seems to have been the meaning it originally had back in its earliest usage.

However, it does have a couple of other meanings, too.

However, the only other meaning that is regularly used in texting for “ATP” is as an abbreviation for “at this point”.

“Not looking good for our team ATP,” for example.

These two things are generally what people mean when they use ATP while texting.

I’ll get into some other meanings that this term can have in different contexts, but “answer the phone” is by far the most likely meaning in texting.

Where did this term originate, then?

Where does ATP come from?

As with many such abbreviations, it’s quite hard to trace its precise origin.

With this one, though, unlike with others, we can say with reasonable surety that it originated in text abbreviations rather than in online chatrooms in the early period of the internet.

If you’re asking someone to answer the phone, likelihood is you’ve got their phone number!

Unfortunately, though, we can’t pinpoint an exact origin for this abbreviation.

It seems to have been in use by the middle of the 1990s, when consumer mobile phones were becoming more commonplace, and alphanumeric keyboards made typing out long sentences a much more tedious process.

Despite its age, it’s still commonly used today on all sorts of social media, and even with the speed of texting now, many people do still prefer to speak on the phone.

Let’s look at the various ways it’s used on social media.

What does ATP mean on social media?

ATP can have a variety of meanings on social media.

First and foremost, as I’ve said, it can just mean the same thing that it has always meant in texting.

People use ATP on Snapchat, TikTok, Twitter and virtually all social media to mean “answer the phone” still. It’s another way of getting someone’s attention, either to warn them before you’re going to call them, or to essentially pester them to answer because you’ve been calling.

However, its meaning has adapted somewhat over the years.

It can, as I said, very commonly mean “at this point” on social media.

Twitter, Facebook and other similar sites where text-based posts are the main means of communication see this abbreviation quite a lot.

Because it’s so widely used and understood to mean “at this point” in a social media post, people often simply tack it on to the end of a post to drive home a point or contextualize something a bit more.

On TikTok, though, it tends to more often have its older meaning of “answer the phone”.

At the moment, TikTok really drives trends in a way few other social medias do, so TikTok is really cementing its older meaning of “answer the phone”.

Does it have any other meanings?

What else does ATP mean?

ATP can have a few other meanings, although most of them are quite context-specific.

The least context-specific of the other things ATP might mean is “aged to perfection”.

This is very often used on TikTok particularly to describe older celebrities or just anyone who has stayed beautiful and attractive in their old age.

It can also be used to describe very old social media posts which seemed to somehow predict a future event.

“This post has ATP,” for example, with a screenshot or link to the older post.

It might even mean “advanced threat protection,” which is a cybersecurity term used to describe security systems meant to prevent large-scale cyber-attacks.

While this one’s a lot less likely a more likely to be used in a professional setting, it’s always a possibility!

The overwhelming likelihood, then, is that if someone says “ATP” to you directly, especially through a text or message, they are asking you to answer the phone when they call.

People today certainly dislike talking on the phone more than ever before, but these abbreviations have seemingly been necessary for a long time!

However, if you’re on certain social media, it could mean something else, so that’s good to be aware of, too.
